PE
At the Devon Hospital Short Stay School, we recognise the value of physical activity for both the health and the well-being of our young people. Our approach allows improvement to be made in personal, social, cognitive and creative behaviours. We encourage understanding of the importance of healthy participation so pupils can recognise that an active life promotes a healthy lifestyle and improved mental health.
Through PE, our pupils develop confidence, social skills and resilience whilst having fun! They have opportunities to try a range of sports and develop their own preferences. For some of our pupils, physical activity aids their recovery and allows them to spend time with others, something that may have been absent due to a medical condition.
At the RD&E hospital we have an outside area which can be used for ball games, basketball, badminton etc. as well as for skill development for younger pupils. At the Outreach Centre we are able to use the nursery field and an indoor room for PE activities such as dodgeball, dance or athletics. We also make use of the local tennis courts and large park which are within easy walking distance.
Where pupils are studying PE at GCSE level, we are also able to support with the theoretical aspects of the course. We liaise with their main school so that we can follow the same syllabus that is being offered by their chosen exam board.
